The Indie Community (01/03/2013)

It’s been another busy week in the local gaming community in Scotland. New games, new apps and a new blog to keep you up to date with the latest happenings!

Game In Scotland

For those who have listened to our previous podcasts, this is a quick update on the Game in Scotland event in Dundee. It has been moved to Saturday 9th March and is now in Fat Sam’s Nightclub. The event starts at midday and is on a first-come, first-serve basis. It still offers a full schedule of game developers including Distant Star developer Blazing Griffin.

Distant Star - Blazing Griffin

Distant Star is now a free download on the Apple App Store. It is a single player/multiplier turn based strategy game in a Sci-fi setting. Players build an empire and vie for control of the galaxy by military might, technological prowess or diplomacy. It does not make the player have to control massive fleets; instead the player controls small squads, giving more consequence on losing a single ship.
Again it’s a free download so give it a try.

Windows Ambassador Survey

Michael Cameron, a Windows ambassador, has recently published a survey and is looking for student game developers to help them out. It is a short, six-question survey that does not take long to complete. If you are a student game developer, help them out by completing the survey here . In doing so you will help the Windows Game Ambassador team by giving them a better idea of what apps are being developed, what platform they are being developed for and how they are being developed. You’ll also be helping your job prospects by taking part, as you have this great opportunity to build your portfolio of games.

AudioSkins

A local Dundee-based company, AudioSkins, have rolled out new game and app sound collections on their website, with some content being published as free! AudioSkins offers a large selection of audio content, suitable for games, television, websites and apps – all at affordable prices. Each AudioSkin, or pack, gives you a title track, in-game loop music, win and loss jingles and various in-game sound effects. These can be purchased as a pack or bought separately. It is incredibly useful for app developers to use as a starting point or even as the complete sound package for your game.

AudioSkins is part of Euphonious, who have been working on popular games such as ‘Lego Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Lego Pirates of the Caribbean’ since their inception in 2011. Raymond Usher, founder of Euphonious Limited, is also a multi-award winner, including a massive seven BAFTA awards, and is also a regular BAFTA audio jury member. He has worked on massive titles such as ‘Grand Theft Auto 1, 2, III and Vice City’.
AudioSkins content is of incredibly high standard and you are bound to find something that would be useful for your app.

4J Studios

Big congratulations to 4J Games who have won Best Downloadable Game 2012 at the Virgin Media Awards this week. This is another award to add to their growing pile due to the success of Minecraft on Xbox Live Arcade.

That’s all for this week. Make sure to check back for more blogs, and remember to tune in to the podcast every Saturday at 6pm (GMT). If you have any news stories to share with us, contact us by e-mail, Facebook and Twitter.
